NAIT recognizes that knowledge and skills are gained?in different ways, including through?life and work experiences. We are committed to supporting a community in which learners will receive appropriate credit or recognition for prior learning, whether achieved through formal or informal training or through experience.
What is Recognition of Prior Learning?
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) evaluates the learning that people have acquired in their lives. The provincial government defines 3 types of learning, which are assessed through 3 different?processes.
- Learn about the 3 types of learning and assessment processes (Alberta Enterprise and Advanced Education).
- Learn how your previous education can be assessed for transfer credit.??
- Learn how your completed certificate, diploma or degree can be assessed through?credential recognition.
- Learn how the skills you acquired through work experience and other activities can be assessed through prior learning assessment and recognition (PLAR).
Students must have been accepted to their NAIT credit program before submitting a request for Transfer Credit, Credential Recognition or PLAR. Open Studies students are not eligible to apply for advanced credit as they have not been accepted to a NAIT program.
It will take a maximum of 6 weeks to complete your RPL assessment.
RPL and Student Status
Advanced credit may help you achieve your educational goals sooner, but it may affect your eligibility for financial aid or academic honours. This is because the definition of full-time status for financial aid may be different than NAIT’s.
Only the courses you actually take at NAIT count towards determining full-time status.
For questions about financial aid, contact the Student Service Centre, CAT 180, Centre for Applied Technology, Main Campus. You can also call 780.471.6248.
For questions about academic honours, including semester honours, the Dean’s Honour Roll, an honours diploma/certificate, or awards, review NAIT’s Academic?Regulations and Procedures (pdf), or contact advising or program staff.
RPL for Program Admission
You may be able to use your prior learning to gain admission to a program if you don’t qualify for admission standards. See RPL for Program Admission for more information.
